The Anambra childless widow sleeping in the open

For the second time in two weeks another widow has incur the wrath of her inlaws in Anambra state as she was thrown out few days after the burial of her husband.

The widow, Mrs Mary Ugochukwu, an indigene of Umuezenebo, Ifite village, Nanka, Orumba North Council Area, and married in same community, was sent packing barely two days after the burial of her husband.

 

Information has it that the family members of her late husband, identified as Nwokedi family, threw her out and locked up the house because of her childlessness.

According to a source, the widow, who has been rendered homeless, was sighted sleeping on bare ground at midnight.

When contacted, the Chairman of the Village, Chief Mike Ezemaduka, declined to comment on the issue, and referred newsmen to the President General, even though the community currently has no President General.

Efforts to get the reactions of the traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Godwin Ezeilo, to comment on the issue failed as he did not respond to phone calls nor reply a message sent to him.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the Command had not received the report or any complaints on the issue.

He gave assurance that the Command would take a step to investigate the matter.

It was learnt that a human rights group has visited the widow with a view to take up the matter and ensure justice prevails.
