It was said that in the colonial days, the African continent especially, Nigeria, was regarded as white man’s grave because of the killing effects of testefly on the Caucasians hence the name.
Independent Newspapers is gradually assuming that name with its journalists and non journalists in its employment are dieing like flies not because of tsetesefly bite but as a result of non payment of years of salary by successive managing directors of the paper.
The latest being the death of it Editorial Board Chairman, Donatus Duru. Duru stepped into that office 2015 or thereabout after Prince Adekanmi Ademuluyi. He died of kidney problem complicated by diabetes, which he would have been able to manage if he was paid on a regular basis but not no so as he worked for a company that takes pride in not pay labourers their wage.
Before the death of Duru, many have died without payment and it is not clear if their dependants have settled. That is a story for another day.
