Says, ‘he has tarnished our image’

Chairman of the Agbado Oke Odo Local Council Development Authority, Engineer David Famuyiwa, has described as shameful the allegation of corrupt practices preferred against one of his councillors,

Ogunyemi, it will be recalled is being detained as we write by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission,ICPC,
over allegation that he was collecting double salary as a civil servant and elected public official.
He was elected into the council in 2017 but has not resigned from his official position at the state Universal Basic Education Board,SUBEB and still collecting salary and emoluments as a civil servant.

The allegation was contained in a petition by a Lagos based group, Lygel Youth and Leadership Initiative.
Speaking further in an exclusive interview with Newdawnngr.com, Engineer Famuyiwa expressed his dissappointment that a councillor with his kind of background could do such an offence being preferred against him adding,”he has tarnished the image of the LCDA. I didn’t expect anything like that to happen to any of my councillors. He has tarnished the image of our LCDA.”.

He confirmed to Newdawnngr.com that the ICPC wrote a letter to him asking him to produce the erring councillor who is now spending his second day with the ICPC in their Ikoyi office in Lagos.

In order to give a fair hearing to the councillor, Famuyiwa said he provided him with a lawyer to accompany him to ICPC office last week and was asked to come back for further interrogation Tuesday before he was eventually detained.
He said further that he felt bad that such an allegation could be preferred against somebody of his background who should know the law and penalty for such an offence.
Said he,”For what I have been hearing, I am not happy that he can do such a thing.I don’t expect such a thing will happen to any of my councillors. It is shameful”.
Asked whether the erring councillor has been released, he said he is yet to get any update from the legal department of the council handling the matter adding,”I wouldn’t say yes until I get briefing from the legal team”.
When contacted on the issue,officials of the ICPC refused to take our calls for the outcome of investigations on the matter.
According to the law, the councillor, if found guilty may be asked to pay back all the money he has collected illegally and even loose his seat in the council and face further prosecution by the anti- corruption agency.
If convicted of the allegations, he cannot hold public office again for a minimum of 10 years. He may get seven years jail term
