On December 15, 2021 during the annual general meeting (AGM) of Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria (MCSN) the presence of a sight challenged member of the society, Mr. Chude Mountains caught the attention of the Director General of Nigerian Copyright Commission, NCC, Prof. John O. Asein
Aside the fact that he Pro. Asein was shocked that such physically challenged person is not only a member but an active one for that matter, he was further shocked that the man moves around with a tiny stick.
On a closer one on one discussion with Mr. Mountains the DG discovered that the tiny stick was a mere short bamboo stick. He was taken aback that such could still happen in Lagos that prides itself as the City of Excellence with its riotous traffic situation.
Then and then Prof. Asein promised the sight challenged man not only to introduce him to the societies for the blind but to acquire him a white stick that will aide his movement.
Many had taught that that was an ‘audio’ (empty) promise most appointees make in Nigeria.
But to the surprise of the management of MCSN, the NCC DG kept his words and on Monday January 11 2022, delivered the stick to Lagos office of the agency and on Thursday, the stick was in the office of MCSN where it was handed over to Mr. Mountains in the presence of the media by Mr Matthew Ojo Dada, the head of NCC’s Lagos office on Prof. Asein’s behalf.
At a small ceremony, Mr. Dada narrated how the physically challenged man and the NCC DG met and how the new copyright law that is with the national assembly will incorporate braille production to help the sight challenged people in reading. He then encouraged MCSN to help fish out such people so they can be made useful to the society too.
Earlier in his speech, the Director General of MCSN thank the NCC’s DG and said the Mr. Mountains is one of the most vibrant member of MCSN who will come all the way from his Ifo abode just to enquire about the welfare of staff members of MCSN, how they get their salaries and off set their rent especially in the days of struggle.
In his own remarks, Mr. Mountains was full of thanks for the honour done. He jocularly remarked that he walked into MCSN’s office with a bamboo stick and walking out with a brand new white stick.
Below are pictures of the presentation ceremony.
