Intro by Charles Okogene with additional reports by Mallam Owechime Abdul
Only a few like Mallam Okwechime Abdul, Femi Anikulapo-Kuti, Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti and a handful of what is known today as veteran journalists remember him. His name is Oghene Kologbo.
Kologbo Oghene was barely seventeen years old when he became a member of FELA’S world famous AFRICA 70 band. He became an instant hit on the tenor guitar, a very dominant instrument in the music of Fela. He came at a time when the heat was hottest both on stage and in FELA’S activism. You had to be an exceptional instrumentalist to be a part in the band. Kologbo not only got a part, he held it down.
He took over the tenor guitar and flirted with the bass as directed by FELA. He shone like a million stars in “Upside Down”, “Pansa Pansa” and made “VIP” into a delight melodious tune. But it was by far in “Follow Follow”, flip side of the “Zombie” album, that Kologbo brought the tenor guitar to a gripping irresistible tone and tune.

Kologbo Oghene
By the time the unreleased “Nigeria Natural Grass”(NNG) hit the stage, Kologbo tenor guitar riff has become a dominant part of FELA’S music. Yet Kologbo couldn’t stay with fame. He drifted off on a tour in search of adventure. He was never able to match the fame FELA’S Band brought to him.
He remained in Europe thereafter until he died on Tuesday December 21, 2021.
