The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Monday gave the Federal Government 48 hours within to accede to its demands or it would take a decisive action.
The union’s President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, said Monday that the ultimatum issued the government to act lapsed on Sunday.
He said the government has the next 48 hours to prevent the union from proceeding on another round of industrial action.
This was just as the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr. Chris Ngige, said he was moving fast to ensure that the university staffers do not embark on another strike.
The last strike saw Nigerian students spending about a year at home.
Ngige had said he would check for the update from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation and the Ministry of Finance for funds release.
Principal officers of the union had met on Sunday after which they are supposed to consult with the various chapters of the union nationwide.
“This is the procedure,” said Osodeke
Already, there are apprehensions on campuses as students fear another round of strike.
A student of the University of Ibadan, Dare Onisanlu, told NPO Reports Monday another strike would complicate the Nigerian situation.
“That will spell doom for us again,” he said adding that it is the responsibility of the government to avert this strike.”
A lecturer at the University of Ilorin who however pleaded not to be named, said the federal government has been foot-dragging over the entire matter.
“Since the last Memorandum of Agreement, what has the government been looking at? It does not show seriousness.
