Plateau massacre: Names of 25 travelers killed on Saturday

The identities of the travelers killed in Saturday’s attack in Plateau State have been released.

It will be recalled that a total of 25 persons have officially been confirmed killed in the incident.

The incident happened at about 10.30am around Gada-Biyu–Rukuba road area in Jos; the Plateau state capital.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the attackers targeted five coaster buses which were trapped in a gridlock. Subsequently, they proceeded to drag the victims out of their vehicles. Thereafter, they attacked them with machetes, daggers, knives, stones and other dangerous weapons.

In addition, sources say the victims were mainly Fulani who were returning home to Plateau State; after attending the annual Zikr (prayer session) organized by Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi. The session was organized to mark the commencement of Muharram, the new Islamic New Year.

Equally important, about 36 persons have been rescued unhurt from the attack and in good condition.

In the wake of the dastardly attack, a curfew had been imposed by Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong.
The curfew, imposed on three local governments – Jos North, Jos South and Bassa LGAs, take effect between 6pm and 6am.
However, a wave of condemnation has trailed the Plateau incident; with the Presidency, Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) as well as a cross-section of Nigerians united in their calls for the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, the victims have since been buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
The Police has launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.
