The Federal Government has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria.
Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday,by his special assistant to the President on media, Segun Adeyemu
citing the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.
The Minister said the Federal Government has also directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.
It will be recalled that the Social media operator Wednesday deleted President Muhammad’s Buharis comment on Genocidal activity in the South eastern part of the country saying it is against it’s no hate speech rule.
The Federal governments comment has attracted widespread condemnations and reactions of the cross section of Nigerians at home and abroad in view of the implication of the 1967 civil war on the people of South East region.
