The winless run of Sunshine Stars was extended following a goalless result against visiting Jigawa Golden Stars on Sunday.
The Owena Whales had been without a win in their previous thirteen games but got to what was thought to be a promising start on Sunday. Ebuka Akobundu had teed up Ifegwu Ojukwu in the 19th minute but the resulting shot sailed well over the bar from 15 yards out.
Goal scoring chances proved hard to come by in the first half until Sunday Emmanuel curled a shot which whistled past the upright. That was Emmanuel’s last action, as he was replaced by Fuad Ekelojuoti in the 40th minute.
The second half resumed with both coaches ringing changes to force a break through. However, nothing proved worthy to separate both teams as neither side registered a shot on target all through the game.
The goalless result left Sunshine Stars without a win in 14 consecutive games, an unwanted recorded they now share with Remo Stars who achieved the feat in the 2016-17 campaign. Nevertheless, the Owena Whales are still three games short of the longest winless run in the NPFL, set by FC Taraba in the 2014-15 season.
Speaking after the game, Jigawa Golden Stars head coach Gilbert Opana considered the result a point gained despite coming up against a struggling opposition. “Every point gotten is a gain, especially when it is an away game. We know that Sunshine Stars are struggling but that doesn’t make them a bad team,” he said.
What next?
Sunshine Stars will visit FC IfeanyiUBybah while Jigawa Golden Stars host Dakkada FC.
