Former Governor of Abia, Orji Uzor Kalu on Tuesday drop his position and influence by pleading with a Lagos high court to save him from a second trial over money laundering.
Kalu, who was released from prison last year after being jailed for money laundering while serving as the Governor, said a second trial would amount to making him suffer.
His lawyer Prof Awa Kalu, in an exparte motion brought before the court on Tuesday asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to be stopped from retrying him over the matter.
Before Justice Nyang Ekwo, Kalu’s lawyer sought for an order of the court prohibiting the Federal Republic of Nigeria, through the EFCC, its officers, servants, others, agents, privies and any other person or bodies deriving authority from the Federal Republic of Nigeria, from retrying him on charge No. FHC/ABJ/CR/56/2007 between FRN vs Orji Kalu & 2 ors or any other charge based on the same facts de novo, there being no extant judgment and ruling of a competent court in Nigeria mandating same.
His arraignment could not start however as the EFCC had made a case for the transfer of the matter to a Lagos court.
