Lobi Stars moved into the top three of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) after holding Enugu Rangers to a goalless draw at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.
Despite playing the last ten minutes with a man down after Ossy Martin was sent off for anti sporting behaviour, The Pride of Benue produced some composed defending to pick up what may prove to be a massive point come the end of the season.
Rangers started the game with some beautiful high tempo football and should have gone ahead inside five minutes when Isreal Abia, put through on goal, lobbed the goal keeper only for his effort to be cleared off the line by Moses Teshuan of Lobi Stars.
This was quickly followed by another chance for the Flying Antelopes, this time it was Dauda Madaki who saw his fine strike from outside the area saved by Moses Oche, the goalkeeper of Lobi.
Lobi gradually settled into the match and seized control of the midfield, denying Rangers the opportunity to create chances. They would creat a clear chance of their own in the 38th minute when Ossy Martin was served a sitter inside six yards but failed to score because he went for style rather than a powerful shot.
The second half was less entertaining with both sides creating half chances but Lobi Stars will be the happier team as they claimed a much needed away point.
Salisu Yussuf, head coach of Rangers rated the fixture as tough, blaming the result draw on the players
“The match was tough because we came up against a very tactical side. I am a little disappointed with my team because they didn’t play at the level which we are used to but that’s football, you can’t win all the time”, said the former Super Eagles coach.
He promised that they will regroup and plan towards the next match.
For Coach Kabiru Dogo of Lobi Stars, it was a satisfactory result that made him happy
“I am very happy with my team. They showed a lot of courage and hard work against a very top side that are in good form. Hopefully this result will influence the team positively as we prepare for the next matches”, he said at thevpost match presser.
