Osun State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, on Saturday said his government is set to empower over 100,000 people in the state this year to lessen the effects of harsh economy on citizens.
Oyetola spoke in Ede while distributing cheques to 198 indigenes of Ayilaka’s compound, Ede, who were given different sums of money by the chairman, Matrix Energy, Alhaji Abdul-Kabir Aliu, to support their trade and in scholarship.
Oyetola, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr Yemi Lawal, commended Aliu for the gesture and urged the beneficiaries to invest the money wisely.
He said, “Times are hard, but I assure you that the government will always place priority on the interest of the masses. This year, we plan to empower over 100, 000 residents.”
Speaking on how the beneficiaries were selected, an Ambassador-designate from Osun State, Chief Adejare Bello, said the money given to the recipients was non-refundable and was a follow up to the first phase of empowerment done at Aranyin compound, Ede, where 213 people received various sums of money for business and in scholarship.
According to him, beneficiaries of the second phase of the empowerment initiative were mainly drawn from Ayilaka’s compound, where mother of the donor hails from, adding that a sum of N50m was distributed to the 198 people.
