Gas explosion rocks another Lagos suburb

Another major gas explosion has rocked Iju,suburb of Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, with figures of casualty still uncertain.

Over 20 people were however reportedly injured in the explosion that occurred at Ajuwon, few minutes to Ajuwon Hill headquarters of the Grail Movement and two kilometres from Iju Ishaga area of Lagos State on Thursday.

Properties worth millions of Naira including over four vehicles were also burnt.

The explosion also damaged some buildings within same proximity with the explosion site.

Spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Agency, (LASEMA)Nosa Okunbor, confirmed the incident.

He noted that emergency responders have arrived at the scene of the incident.

He said, “On arrival at the scene, it was observed that there was a gas explosion.
“Further investigation revealed that a truck had a lone accident and exploded.

“The impact of the explosion affected adjoining buildings and several vehicles were burnt.

“Several persons were injured and have been taken to the nearest hospital for treatment.

“The inferno is being tackled by the combined efforts of the LASEMA Response Team led by the Director Operations, LRU Fire, LASG Fire Service, Nigeria Police Force, and NSCDC.
“Dampening down ongoing,” he said.

“No one is yet to access the site to ascertain the number of casualty. All we know for sure is that some people were at the site when the explosion occured,” an eye witness, Ireti Balogun, said.

“We all just heard a big bang around 03.33 pm. The explosion was massive and like I said we are not sure of the casualties, but many people are injured,” she added.
