…Says fifth columnist may be at work
Special adviser to the minister of Defence,Gen Magashi,Gen Ahmed Jibrin has observed that fifth columnist within the army rather than sabotage might be responsible for weekend attack of the convoy of Borno Governor, Babagana Zulum.
Speaking in an interactive live programme on Channels Televisions Politics Today,he said that soldiers could not have attacked the governor but rather fifth columnists and informants within the troop must have been responsible for leakage.
As a result he said the federal government must get to the root of the matter by setting up a special investigation to unravel the circumstances that led to the attack.
Said he,”it has happened already and elaborate investigations has started from the military to unravel it” adding ,”I for sure know that no commander in his right senses will attract the convoy of the governor from the state”.
Earlier in his contribution,Group Captain Sadeeq Shehu(rtrd),an adviser on security and safety for the African Union Commission, observed that the war on insurgency had reduced from what it was in between 2011-2015 when the Book Haram militants were in control of 20 local governments in Borno state but said that the present high figure of casualties in the North east and North west is attributable to activities of bandits which has compounded the security situation in the country.
On the attack on the Borno Governor,he said that ordinarily, war commanders don’t welcome civilian VIPs in their areas adding “VIPs presence in war zones attract bullets and they should move away from such areas.”
He is of the opinion that if there is fear of sabotage from the military, the governor should have contacted the commander in chief and brief him personally.
“Governor Zulum has his own concern to ensure peace returns to the area and the military too their own targets to reduce the activities of the insurgents” he declared.
It will be recalled that ,Governor Zulum has accused the military of sabotage for the attack on his convoy days before the sallah celebration.
