The Chairman of Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), Chief Tony Okoroji, has added his well informed voice to the raging controversy surrounding the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission’s (NBC) new code.

Okoroji whose COSON until recently had the sole licence to collect/manage musical copyright in Nigeria had this to say about the code in his verified twitter handle. “Understand the good intents of the new NBC broadcast code,” however, he added “but some of the provisions are unworkable, some are even unconstitutional…”
Okoroji who has been in and out of the courtroom with the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) over the way the later carries on about its oversight functions on copyright management organisations (CMO), pointed out that NBC cannot over reach itself by usurping the role of the National Assembly ( NASS) and called for a revisit to the code.
“The commission cannot over-reach its powers and assume the powers of the National Assembly. The code needs to be revisited” thus adding constitutional angle to the controversy, which most Nigerians have been hailing from ‘patriotic, monopoly and commercial prisms’ alone.
