The rape and death of a 100 level student of Management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Vera Omozuwa, has become a subject of controversy as accusing fingers are been pointed at the suspect who obviously took advantage of the student.

The deceased who until her death was a member of the choir of one of the branches of the Redeemed Christian Church of God(RCCG) was allegedly raped and murdered by the suspect now at large.
The victim was a 100 level Microbiology student of the institution before her travail.
Vice Chancellor of UNIBEN, Prof. Lilian Salami, in a statement through the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Benedicta Ehanire, described the news as shocking.
In the statement made available to newsmen on Sunday in Benin, the VC said the actions were condemnable and should not be condoned by any society.
She said the current COVID-19 pandemic was already hard on everyone and that compounding it with inflicting additional pain on any family was a wicked act.
While commiserating with the bereaved family on the loss of their daughter, Salami prayed God to grant her soul peaceful rest.
The vice chancellor urged students of the institution and indeed all young people to be wary of the company they kept and the places they visited.
Meanwhile, a delegation had been sent by the university’s management to commiserate with the bereaved family.

However,in its reaction, the leadership of the Redeemed Christian Church of God said the student in question was until her death a member of the church choir who always took advantage of the lockdown to do her private studies in the church since the lockdown of the Church and the University.
While expressing the grief of the RCCG over the incident,Pastor Olaitan Olubiyi, head media and public relations of the RCCG said on May 27, the day in question, the deceased collected the key to the church hall of her parish as was her practise since the lockdown for use for her personal studies and to take advantage of the lockdown which the Church complied with.
He however, explained further that,”On the said date, when the night guard at the Church resumed duties a little after 7 pm, he found the lady on the floor in the Church Hall half-naked and in the pool of her blood.
The parents and other people were alerted and she was taken to a nearby hospital from where she was transferred to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) where efforts were made to save her life. Unfortunately, she gave up the ghost on Saturday night.”
It is the prayer of the leadership of this Church that God will expose the evildoers and help the security agencies to unravel this wicked act.
