Ebie tells Child Right Law implementation Committee to work in harmony

Members of the Delta State Child Right Law Implementation Committee have been charged to work in unity, common purpose and maximum commitment for them to achieve the objectives for which they have been set up by the state government.

The Secretary to the Delta State Government (SSG), Mr Chiedu Ebie, gave the charge when he inaugurated the 27-member committee at the Boardroom of Benezia Hotel, Asaba.
Mr Ebie said that although the Federal Government enacted the child rights law in the country in 2003, it was domesticated in Delta State in 2009.
According to the SSG, efforts had been made since then to fully implement its provisions and had yielded less than expected results.

He noted that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa came up with the initiative of the Child Rights Implementation Committee to provide a solid and systematic framework for the operation of the Child Rights Law.

The SSG explained that the Child Rights Law Implementation Committee shall oversee the implementation of the Childs Right law in the state, saying that its function include to initiate actions that shall ensure the observance and popularization of the rights and welfare of a child as provided by the law.

Other functions, he said included continuously keep under review the states implementation of the rights of the child and develop and recommend to the state and local government through their respective child rights implementation committee specific programs and projects, that will enhance the implementation of rights of the child amongst others.

He urged the committee to rise up to the challenge and responsibility of its assignment, stressing that the state government attached high priority to it and would provide necessary assistance to facilitate the committee’s work.

Earlier in her remarks, the Chairman of the Child Rights Implementation Committee and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs, Community and Social Development, Mrs Kevwe Agas, said that the sustenance and upbringing of the Delta child was of paramount importance to the state government, assuring that the committee would do everything possible to deliver on its mandate.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Special Duties, Bridget Anyafulu, a lawyer, said that the State Child Rights Law Implementation Committee was a creation of the child rights law which was conceived in the law as an organ to coordinate and oversees the implementation of the child rights law in the state.

She stated that the committee drew its membership from a wide range of institutions that were working on child-related issues.
