The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi ,has warned the public of the outbreak and spread of snail fever also known as Schistosomiasis endemic in Lagos.
The water borne disease, he disclosed has spread to places like Ikeja, Ifako-Ijaye, Agege, Alimosho, Oshodi-Isolo, Amuwo-Odofin and Lagos Mainland Local Governments.
In other to curb the spread,he said health workers have since Monday December 2, 2019 been deployed to schools, homes and other places to control the disease among children between the ages of five to 14 years. The exercise would end on December 8, 2019.
The disease is caused by parasitic flatworms called SCHISTOSOMES due to contact with fresh water infested with the larval forms of flatworms.
The microscopic adult worms live in the veins, draining the urinary tract and intestines of affected children.
