Counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC),
Wahab Shittu, has established a linkage between pervasive corruption and insecurity in the country saying,the government policies should prevent looting rather than recovering it.
He and other stakeholders spoke yesterday at a one day conference with the Theme: Fighting Corruption and insecurity-The way forward,organised by Scroll report, an on line newspaper.
According to Shittu, the weaknesses in the nations security apparatus is a function of the unitary system being practised which has centralised policing and efforts aimed at tackling it adding, “insecurity is a collective enterprise,if you don’t tackle them it will explode in our faces”.
Speaking further,he said that since Boko Haram attack does not exclude moslems,it has made it a criminal enterprise which has affected the nations economy and threaten its cohesiveness.
” if you believe BH is to foist Islamic agenda on the Nigerian state you are wrong because it is just an evil organisation which has to be treated as such.They are evil people and should be treated as such.
” All of us concerned be they bankers,business barons,career personnel has all contributed to threaten the foundation above the country.
He said that the security architecture is out of date adding,”how can you bring anybody from Zamfara to come and police Oshogbo or Lagos.it cannot work.
He said the earlier the better the Federal government embraced the idea of state police the better for the country.
He is of the opinion that the federalism being practised in the country is in the fever gear hence the need for the central government to devolve power to the states .
According to him,since every crime is local he said the police system should be on a state basis for it to be effective.
Also speaking ,the former Lagos state police commissioner,Fatai Owoseni also blamed the insecurity and prevalence of corruption on the societal values which have gone down because of the erosion of family values adding, “we should not sit down and pamper our children for the sake of others pointing out that this has corrupted the system and remove core values from the society.
” what are you doing in your own corner to fight insecurity since it’s a local and general problem”he said adding that information sharing and intelligence gathering is crucial to solving any security challenge”
In her own speech,Toun Okewale, the proprietor of WFM, a women based radio station said fighting gender violence and insecurity should bevregarded as an overdue decision since women are home makers and by extension the family.
She contended that this is necessary since women bore the consequences of neglect if health sector allocation is diverted or stolen by corrupt politicians.
She also identified political violence on women as done through vote buying and sex for mark issue in our higher institutions.
Also speaking in the same vein, Segun Jegede, a barrister identify the lack of national patriotism and a dysynfunctional legal system as fundamental problem of nations security.
