Ekiti State Government organises sensitisation workshop for traditional birth attendants

The Ekiti State Government has charged the Traditional Birth Attendants operating in the State to take notice of dangerous signs of Pregnant women while trying to take delivery of newborn baby.

The Commissioner for Health and Human services Dr (Mrs)Mojisola Yaya-Kolade gave the charge at a Sensitisation Workshop organized for Traditional Birth Attendants in Ekiti state .

Dr Yaya-Kolade noted that the Workshop became necessary as a result of the importance of the Traditional Birth Attendants in Ekiti state noting that pregnant women especially in the local areas respect and prefer patronizing them than the government hospitals.

“The Traditional Birth Attendants needed to be trained on how to recognize red lines while trying to take delivery of newborn baby ,so as to ensure that the baby lives as well as the mothers”. She Said.

The commissioner lauded the efforts of governor Kayode Fayemi for making Health of Ekiti residents his priority.

Earlier in her remarks , the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health and Human Services ,Dr (Mrs) Folakemi Olomojobi noted that the wealth of a nation is measured by the health of her people, stressing the need for pregnant women to have access to trained Birth Attendants .

“No life should be lost while trying to give birth to another life”. she added.

Mrs Olomojobi charged the Traditional Birth Attendants to give attention to details while performing their duties.
She added that whenever they sense dangerous signs that they should refer such cases to specialist hospitals without delay.

Also while speaking, the Permanent Secretary State Primary Health Care Development Agency Pham.Olabisi Arogundade stated that the Workshop was a great step in a right direction noting that Traditional Birth Attendants compliment the efforts of the Agency.

“Traditional Birth Attendants are partners in progress in health development of our state and this sensitisation Workshop Will give them better understanding of their work”. She stressed.

In her lecture, one of the resource persons at the Workshop ,Dr. Funmi Ibikunle implored the Traditional birth Attendants to always encourage pregnant women and mothers of child bearing age to embrace family planning ,child spacing as well as using treated nets to fight against malaria which could lead to untimely death”

Other lecturers at the Workshop Included Dr Sunday Omoya, Dr.Albert Odebunmi, Mrs. Yewande Akute, Mrs. Yemisi Oluwabusayo amongst others.

Some of the participants lauded the Ekiti state government for the initiative to organize training for the Traditional Birth Attendants,urging that it should be a continuous exercise. They pledged to make use of what had been learnt from the sensitisation workshop.
