Sleep under treated nets-commissioner urges pregnant women

Ekiti state ministry of health have urged parents and nursing mothers to use the treated nets given by the state government to their advantage.

According to the ministries information officer,Abiodun Olofe,the charge as made by the commissioner for health and human services Dr. Mojisola Yaya-Kolade, in igbara Odo Ekiti during the training of the role model care givers on hanging of long lasting treated nets.

Dr Yaya-Kolade enjoined the role model care givers selected from the wards across the state to carry out the assignment diligently as expected by the state government. She narrated some of the advantages of using long lasting treated nets to include prevention against malaria of pregnant women and children under age five.

The commissioner laid emphasis on family planning for all parents in Ekiti state and encouraged pregnant women to deliver their babies at the government facilities,stressing that any traditional birth attendant that refer pregnant women to government hospitals would be rewarded handsomely by the government through the ministry of health and human services.

Also speaking,the Permanent Secretary ministry of health and human services ,Dr Folakemi Olomojobi, applauded the turnout of role models and also urged the people of Ekiti state especially pregnant women and children under age five to cooperate with the role model care givers that would be moving from house to house to ensure compliance of sleeping under the treated nets.

Earlier , the director Disease Control in the ministry, Dr. Ayodele Seluwa, applauded the state governor for the initiative and said it is first of its kind that government would give out treated nets to everyone and monitor those pregnant women and children under age five sleep under it.

Dr.Seluwa said the aim of the exercise is to eradicate malaria and other neglected tropical diseases in Ekiti state. He said Ekiti state was the first state to carry out such exercise in Nigeria.

Some of the role model care givers appreciated the state government and Dr Kayode Fayemi for the opportunity to serve humanity and all pledged to discharge their duties by ensuring that pregnant women and children under age five sleep under the treated nets having helped them hang the nets

The programme is expected to last for six weeks across all the 16 local government areas of Ekiti state.
