Ekiti: Commissioner tasks health professionals on reduction of  maternal, perinatal deaths

The Ekiti state government has charged all health professionals in the state to ensure the reduction in the high maternal  mortality rate in the state.

 

The Ekiti  State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr.Mojisola Yaya -Kolade gave the charge while declaring open  Training on Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) Ekiti state steering committee for Secondary and Tertiary facilities in Ekiti State.

 

Dr. Kolade noted that the training was expedient as a result of high level of maternal mortality rate in Nigeria.

 

“Presently Nigeria has the second highest maternal mortality and the fourth highest maternal mortality ratio in the world” she noted.

 

The commissioner stated that the training was historic and a step in a right direction, adding that the training was an opportunity for each health professional to contribute to the reduction of death of Ekiti women and children .

 

‘This training is scheduled to raise the bar on the prevention of maternal and perinatal deaths in Ekiti state ” The  commissioner stated.

 

Earlier in her remarks ,the permanent secretary Ministry of Health and Human Services, Dr Folakemi Olomojobi stated that the Ekiti state government under the leadership of Dr Kayode is committed to ensuring that no life of Ekiti resident is lost to preventable deaths.

 

“It’s our expectation that the implementation of Maternal and perinatal death surveillance and response strategies in our health system will improve the quality of health care delivery generally” She said.

 

In his welcome address, the chairman of the Maternal and Perinatal Death surveillance and perinatal Committee Dr Sunday Omoya Stated that the training was to discuss on ways to reduce maternal and perinatal mortality in various health facilities in the state and Nigeria .

 

Dr. Omoya stated that the purpose of the training was to scale up the MPDSR to each facility to ensure commencement of appropriate ‘no name ,no game’ audit system that will significantly reduce maternal mortality in all Ekiti facilities.

 

” Maternal and perinatal deaths in Nigeria have been declared notifiable events and all hands must be on deck to prevent them” .The Medical practitioner noted.

There were good will messages from partners and guests at the event including Ekiti state commissioner of police,world health organization consultant for Ekiti state,general manager Ekiti state health insurance scheme among others.
