The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, ASUSS has commended the Federal Government for the establishment of the National Secondary Schools Commission.
The union said the commission will improve the quality of Secondary education in terms of unified and regulated curriculum.
The establishment is a product of it’s long years of advocacy along other stakeholders in the country.
According to a statement signed by the union’s National President, Mr Sam Omaji on Tuesday, the commission would improve the recruitment of qualified personnel into the teaching service as well as improved government funding in the sector.
Omaji called on the Federal government to make appointment of membership of the commission competitive so to pave way for the emergence of professionals that would drive the process.
He added that making such appointment on the basis of patronage would not augur well for secondary education in the country as it would compromise the fundamental objectives of the commission.
The president, however, urged the government to consider practising and retired secondary schools tutors who are the direct stakeholders of the sector, as well as representatives of tested parents in the appointment.
