Caretaker, 60, docked for allegedly stealing N541,000 from landlord

A 60-year-old caretaker was on Friday docked before an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State for allegedly stealing N541,000 from a landlord.

Tony Joshua, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of obtaining by false pretense and stealing.

The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Adegeshin Famuyiwa, said that the defendant committed the offences in February 2018, at 9, Thomas Laniyan St., in Ajegunle area of Ikorodu.

Famuyiwa said that the defendant obtained the money from a tenant in one Mr Peter Popoola’s building, but failed to remit the money to him.

He said the N541,000 was a two-year rent payment, and the landlord reported to the police when the defendant could not remit the money he collected.

Famuyiwa said that the offences contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, Mr E.O Ogunkanmi, granted the defendant N100,000 bail with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until May 30 for mention.
