An accident this afternoon on the Third Mainland bridge, Lagos has caused a heavy traffic on the route of commuters escaping the Lagos Island before the usual evening traffic.

The accident led to a BRT bus (Red Bus) razed right on the bridge at about 2pm.

None of the travelers on the bus was seen as at the time the fire was put out but policemen and officials of the Lagos State Management Authority (LASTMA) were at the scene assisting motorists to clear the traffic which already stretched through some kilometres.

The Bus was conveying passengers from the Lagos Island to the mainland when it caught fire midway on the bridge. It is not certain if any life was lost as there was no such traces.

Just yesterday, an accident involving a bus conveying goods to the Lagos Island and a salon car occurred on the same Third Mainland bridge.

The Wednesday morning accident however left occupants of the salon car badly injured but no life was lost according to observation of New Dawn’s reporter.

The car was on its way to the Lagos Island and providence prevented it from plunging into the lagoon as it was stopped by the railing after the impact of the accident flung it to the side of the bridge.

A short clip:

Motorists have been advised to maintain moderate speed and drive with focus while on the bridge so they could manage emergency situations.

The Third Mainland bridge is the longest of the three bridges connecting Lagos Island to the mainland.

It was the longest bridge in Africa until 1996 when The 6th October Bridge in Cairo, the Egyptian capital was completed.

Nigeria’s longest bridge was built in 1990 measuring about 11.8kilometre in length. It was officially named Ibrahim Babangida Bridge after the then Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida.
