An Upper Area Court 1 sitting in Kasuwan Nama, in Jos on Friday sentenced a 23-year-old Welder, Mohammed Awwalu, to one year imprisonment for conspiracy, shop breaking and stealing
The Judge, Lawal Suleiman, sentenced Awwalu after he pleaded guilty to the three-count charge and begged the court for leniency.
Suleiman, however, gave the convict an option to pay a fine of N5, 000 or five months in prison for conspiracy; N10, 000 or one year for shop breaking; and N10, 000 or one year for theft.
The Judge said that the sentences were to run concurrently and also ordered that the defendant should pay a compensation of N250, 000 to the complainant.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported on Dec. 25, 2018 at the Laranto Police Station by Abdulrasheed Salandeen, the complainant of No 5 Farin Gada, Jos.
Gokwat said that the defendant was caught after he had broken into the shop and stole radiator, batteries, wire nozzle, compressor, two alternators, power steering pump, all valued at N400,000.
According to the prosecutor, the defendant left the stolen items with Danlamiru and Bashiru, now at large.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 59, 334 and 272 of Plateau State Penal Code Law.
