Women interested in politics have been given winning guidelines necessary to excel in the male dominated political terrain.
Senior Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire who encouraged women to participate in the electoral process in order to contribute their quota to the development of the nation, made the call on Saturday in Lagos while after casting her vote at the at the Presidential and the National Assembly elections.
Commenting on the low participation of women in the electoral process in Nigeria, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Princess Orelope-Adefulire said, “In this part of the world, we know that this thing is dominated by men but there is no law saying the women should not participate.
“No law stopped me and I know no law can stop any woman from participating. We just have to be courageous and be sure of what we want to do. We must be determined and follow the rules of the game.
“If we are courageous, and follow the rules of the game and we are passionate, definitely we will do it and do it well. But in a situation whereby we are not sure of ourselves and we are seeing it as opportunity to break our homes or see it as opportunity to boost our ego, one cannot go far,” she said.
Continuing, the Senor Special Adviser to the President enjoined women to see politics as opportunity to serve and make efforts to learn.
“If you see politics as an opportunity to serve, you maintain a low profile, maintain your home, then the sky is not the limit. If you are ready and can abide by the law, respect your husband, pay attention to the game and be committed, try to assist your community, keep your hope intact, you will surely make it.
“It is not by mere words but you back it with actions, I don’t think you will have any problem going by the above guidelines,” she said.
She also told New Dawn that more women are willing to come in to politics and make their marks.
“More women are ready to come and the Goal 10 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which I supervise talks about gender equality. So women can aspire to be anything; women are engineers, doctors or tell me any profession that women can not fit into and even do it better than men? She asked.
