The Lagos State Independent National Electoral Commission has declared President Muhammadu Buhari as the winner of last Saturday’s presidential election in the state.
Buhari, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) defeated his main challenger in the presidential contest, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president of the Federal Republic and presidential flagbearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with over 130,000 votes.
The President polled 580, 825 as against Atiku’s 448, 015.
Announcing the result at about 6.30pm at the Birrel Avenue, Yaba headquarters of the state INEC, the commission’s state collating officer, Prof Felix Kolawole Salako said with the result announcement, the exercise had been brought to an end.
The university don expressed his gratitude to all stakeholders for their co-operation, understanding and support.
Other parties’ scores, according to him, included DPP 1,372, PPA 759, AAC 8, 910, ANN 6,946, ADC 2,915 and Young Progressives Party (YPP) among others.
The results showed that APC won in 15 out of the state’s 20 local government areas while PDP won in the remaining five.
Total valid votes in the election stood at 1,089,567; rejected votes 67, 023 while the total votes cast was put at 1,156,590.
In all, 73 parties participated in the elections which included National Assembly polls.
The collation of the results started at 10.00pm yesterday.
The second leg of this year’s general elections comes up on Saturday, March 9, 2019.
