Low turnout, material shortage threaten polls’ success

The Presidential and National Assembly elections took off on a shaky note in Abesan, Mosan Baruwa and Ipaja areas of Lagos State as there were hitches in many of the polling centres.

Complaints ranged from insufficient ink pads, shortage of ballot boxes and cubicles and faulty card readers.

At units 025, 029, 028 and 036, ballot boxes were in short supply, ink pads were insufficient, there were no cubicles and some of the card readers were non-functional.

At Unit 015, the two card readers were bad.

The resultant effect was that the exercise was slow, leaving the situation rowdy.

Many of the voters were agitated with disappointment boldly written on their faces, raising the fear that they might be disenfranchised.

The situation at units 031, 032, 016, 011, 012 and 013 was different as accreditation and voting commenced early.

Turnout was apparently low, but the general atmosphere was peaceful and orderly.

Also at Abesan units 03, 04, 05, 06, Federal Estate Unit 025 and Baruwa Unit 037, the exercise was smooth as voters’ conduct was orderly peaceful.

There was, however, a slight difference at Baruwa Unit 38 and Opeki units 054 and 055 as there were not enough cubicles, card readers were either hanging or not working outright while there was also shortage of ink pad.

Card readers, particularly at Baruwa Unit 038 derecognized most of the voters, leaving them dejected and demoralised.

Polling officials said technicians have already been contacted, but were yet to be seen.
