A protest by the workers of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in Abuja on Monday has been dispersed by men of the Nigerian Police.

The workers protesting at the headquarters of the institution Monday morning allegedly protested the re-appearance of the suspended Executive Secretary of the scheme, Professor Usman Yusuf who showed up at the office.

The police however stopped the demonstration by firing teargas canisters at workers of the NHIS office.

The Governing Council of the National Health Insurance Scheme had released a list of infractions that eventually promoted the indefinite suspension of the embattled Executive Secretary of the Scheme Usman Yusuf which action is prompting protests at the scheme’s headquarters.

Yusus, 54 began heading the scheme in 2016 and his leadership has been characterised by controversies.

Some of his workers have alleged his highhandedness during his two and half years in office and his suspension has been termed a major breakthrough.

Chairperson of the Governing Council, Enyantu Ifenne had earlier said the council had resolved to suspend Yusuf because his tenure was inundated with petitions and infractions against him in the past six months.

Some of the petitions included procurement violations, financial mismanagement, executive highhandedness, conflict driven management style, total disregard of professional advice by management staff, militarisation of work environment among others.
