Former National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senator, Barnabas Gemade, has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) two months after he followed Senate President, Bukola Saraki to PDP.
Gemade who is 70 years old, said that his defection to Social Democratic Party (SDP) was as a result of reign of impunity in PDP which he joined officially on July 24, 2017.
Gemade who was elected as the National Chairman of the PDP in 1999 at the first national convention of the PDP after the April 1999 general elections also said that both APC and PDP lack rule of law as enshrined in the Constitution.
According to an insider, Gemade felt betrayed by Governor Samuel Orton who he followed to PDP for not protecting his interest to secure PDP Senatorial ticket in Benue state.
Gemade was part of RAPC that joined PDP, but it is like the automatic tickets for defectors have been compromised with defection of Gemade.
He said, “When I ran the PDP, it was an excellent party. Thereafter, impunity took over and that is why so many of us left and went to other parties. I also went to the APC. Those problems cropped up again and it was necessary to move. I have removed myself.
“If you don’t condone something, and it is something you cannot remove from where you are; you remove yourself. Politics is all about times and seasons. The reason is that so many issues had bedevilled a lot of parties.”
It was gathered that Gemade had already picked and submitted the expression of interest and nomination forms of his new party.
