The Taiwan Government has on Thursday called the newly announced U.S. tariff measures as “highly unreasonable’’, vowing to engage in stern negotiations.

Responding to U.S. President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariff policy, the Cabinet, the Taiwan government’s executive branch, said that the 32 per cent tariff on Taiwan was “highly unreasonable.’’

“The tariff rate does not accurately reflect the actual Taiwan-U.S. trade situation and is unfair to Taiwan,’’ Cabinet spokeswoman Michelle Lee said in a statement.

Premier Cho Jung-tai has ordered the Office of Trade Negotiations to review the tariff’s unfair aspects and seek an explanation from the U.S. Trade Representative, Lee said.

Taiwan imposed a 64per cent tariff on U.S. imports.

Taiwan was the U.S.’s seventh-largest trading partner and sixth-largest deficit source.

In 2024, exports to the U.S. rose by 32.5per cent.

Lee said that Trump’s policy ignored the complementary nature of Taiwan-U.S. trade and that Taiwan’s export surge stemmed from rising U.S. demand for semiconductors and AI products. (dpa/NAN)
