Toyota Motor Engineering and Manufacturing is recalling 999,901 of the affected vehicles.

These are: Model year 2020-2021 Avalons, Avalon Hybrids, Corollas, Highlanders, Highlander Hybrids, RAV4s, RAV4 Hybrids, Lexus ES350s, Lexus RX350s & Lexus RX450Hs,

Model year 2021 Sienna Hybrids & Lexus ES250s, and

Model year 2020-2022 Camrys, Camry Hybrids and ES300Hs.

The company disclosed that a short circuit may develop in the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor, preventing the front passenger airbag from deploying, agency report said.

Toyota equally noted that an airbag that fails to deploy in a crash increases the risk of injury to consumers.

In regard to what to do in addressing the defect, the company said dealers would inspect and replace the sensor — as necessary — free of charge.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed February 4, 2024.

Meanwhile, affected vehicle owners may contact Toyota Customer Service on (800) 331-4331.

Toyota’s number for this recall is 23TB15/23TA15; the Lexus number is 23LB03/23LA03.
