A Medical expert has said that  having high blood pressure or being hypertensive is not a death sentence if detected early and properly managed
Speaking at a One Day Free Health Outreach organised by Stop Hurting People Foundation (SHPF) with support from New Evolution Hospital and Dr Tiana Foundation and held at Wasimi Primary school, Onigbongbo, Maryland, Lagos, the Medical Director, New Evolution Hospital, Lagos, Dr. Benjamin Chukwuemeka-Eze stated this.
According to Dr.Eze, high blood pressure is not a disease per se but rather a condition and when not properly managed, it can lead to systemic diseases which can be dangerous.
“Research has shown that between 30 and 40 per cent of Nigeria’s 211 million people lives with hypertension or high blood pressure which is another depressing statistic. This is due to the economic situation in the country, the pandemic and poor living condition of people, and it is a serious health condition that we must look into. Regular checkups, early detection and proper management is very important” said Dr Eze.
Speaking about the massive turn out of both young and old from the host community, the Councillor representing Ward C, Onigbongbo area, Gbenga Adedeji commended the laudable initiative of the organisers adding that government cannot do it alone.
The essence of the free health program according to the host, Executive Director, Stop Hurting People Foundation, Mrs. Eunice Iferi Chukwuemeka is to care for the less privileged in the society. Chukwuemeka who spoke  on the Theme: Except we care, the people die in vain said it is important that those who have should render help to the needy.
The cost implication of the Free Health Outreach she said is over N3 million. Over 200 people both young and old benefitted from the Free health program which include : Free health talk, Free  Medical check and free dispensation of drugs
“Very recently this Foundation gave people in this community free food and clothing and we decided to now provide free health care. Be your brother’s keeper, fingers are not equal, if you are more able that other people, render help to them”  said Mrs. Chukwuemeka
On his part, CDA Chairman, Wasimi Community, Maryland, Onigbongbo Area, Mr Monsuru Lawal said the massive turnout of people in the area is very impressive, he however enjoined beneficiaries to take their health issues seriously.
 “This program came as a surprise but it’s a laudable initiative. The turnout is very impressive, even some neighbouring communities benefitted from this program”, said Lawal.
“Ensure you register, get your PVC and vote the candidate of your choice. Ensure your vote counts” said the Singer/Songwriter, actress and human rights activist, Onyeka Onwenu while addressing beneficiaries of the free health outreach
