The Independent National Electoral Commission on Thursday said there may be a constitutional crisis if the election slated to hold in Anambra State does not hold.
The commission said it is possible for elections to be postponed for certain reasons, but Nigeria has never envisaged a situation where a governorship election does not hold.
There are fears over the escalating violence in Anambra and many parts of the South East states over incessant killings and burning of government facilities.
The INEC chairman Prof Mahmud Yakubu said last week that the target of those unleashing violence on Anambra is to prevent election from holding.
Attorney general and Minister of Justice Abubakar Mallami said on Wednesday that the Federal Government might consider imposing a state of emergency on the state to allow election to hold.
But speaking on behalf of the INEC boss at the second day of the annual conference of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary, said that the media must help to sensitise Nigerians on the need to ensure peace to avert a possible constitutional crisis in Anambra State.
