…Says no time was open grazing legal in Nigeria

Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana has said that Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami should be blamed for President Muhammadu Buhari’s stance on open grazing.

He said it was clear that Malami was the one making the move for bringing back open grazing, citing President Buhari to have said he could not contradict his attorney general in one of the interviews he spoke last week.

Mr. Falana said this on Wednesday when he featured on an Arise New programme, ‘The Morning Show’.

Falana submitted that there has been no time in the history of Nigeria that open grazing was legal around the country. Rather it was a law restricted to the then northern region of the country.

Falana believed the President was getting wrong advice from his Attorney General.

He said, “You can not blame the President because he is not a lawyer.”

“There was no time in the history of Nigeria that grazing routes existing in all the regions and the president was specific when he went back to the first republic. I am saying that in the first republic there were no grazing routes in the entire southern part of the country.

“Ranching is already being conducted in the states,” he added.
