TB response in African region: Unprecedented actions for unprecedented times

423

The COVID-19 pandemic jeopardizes global efforts to save millions of lives and provide access to essential TB care and prevention. Health systems are overstretched due to the unprecedented global health emergency, leading to serious restrictions in access to TB diagnosis, treatment, and prevention services. Globally, these disruptions could result in an additional 6.3 million people developing tuberculosis and 1.4 million additional deaths resulting from TB between 2020 and 2025.

The high-level roundtable is convened in partnership with the African Union, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria and the Ministry of Health of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It will bring together Ministers of Health and dignitaries from Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. A Joint Ministerial Statement on priority actions for effective TB response and impact recovery in the African region will be released following the roundtable.

The media briefing will be moderated by Stop TB Partnership’s Deputy Director, Dr. Suvanand Sahu, and speakers will include Dr. Enos Masini, Regional Advisor, Africa and experts from the Global Fund and the African Union.
