…Says we want good governance
…..Keeps vigil for ninth day at Alausa
Protesting youths who have made a home of Alausa, seat of Lagos government in the past nine days have vowed to continue their struggle to ensure safety for youths and good governance.
Speaking in separate interviews with Newdawnngr.com some of them said not even reopening of schools by federal government after reaching accommodation with Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) will stop their agitation until their demands are met.
One youth who refused to disclose his identity said he had encountered men of dreaded but disbanded Special Anti Robbery Squad(SARS) and had to part with close to N650,000 before he could regain his freedom adding that on another occasion,he had to cough out N150,000 to gain access to his private office.
The youths declared that they have no problem with ASUU but with the system in the country due to bad governance.
When asked what is their reaction to decision of governors from the Northern part of the country to permit operation of SARS they declared,”if they like let them have it but here we don’t want SARS or any other name it is called.”
Meanwhile, the state house of assembly had earlier in the day ask their workers to stay away from work.
At the Alausa secretariat, the atmosphere is sombre as few workers around were going about their work not oblivious of the activities of the youths.
At the venue of the rally opposite the Alausa garden, the youths in their hundreds were seen either listening to music from Fela Anikulapo Kuti from the bandstand which had been there for the past nine days, others were seen queuing diligently to be served food and drinks by the caterer hired by the youths who appeared prepared for a long haul of struggle.
Those who are not in queue for food were seen in groups making speeches or addressing fellow youths.
In another development, another set of youths barricaded the Berger end of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway entrance forcing motorists travelling out of Lagos to look for alternative routes.
Also in some areas of Lagos like Ogba and Agidingbi roads, the youths were seen in their hundreds in peaceful protest.
Although, the governors forum and federal government have mandated state governments to set up enquiry in their respective states to hear cases of abuses by men of SARS,the youths are adamant that they are not yet convinced of government sincerity.
This is the first time in history of class struggle in Nigeria that youths have held government for long to respond to issues affecting security, freedom and good governance.
