The Eye Sore of a multi-billion dollars Railway Project
When the construction of the multi-billion dollars Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge commenced in 2017 ,authorities of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) cleared the squatters who had constructed make shift shacks, tents and erected canopies where they sell used furniture, garbage, metals and other household utilities. The squatters and their tents were all removed from along the Fagba rail line where they have turned into a market and slum to make way for the construction.
They did not stop at that .They erected iron barricades along the stretch from Agege lairage and Abbatoir end to the Fagba rail intersection.
Today, three years after and months after the completion of laying of modern tracks ,the squatters have returned this time in large numbers. They have removed the barricades and constructed their shanties by the new rail line.
By next month authorities of NRC are poised to start the operation of the new standard gauge.
The question Newdawnngr is asking is, will they look on while miscreants who have made the rail track their homes, destroy the aesthetics and environmental sanitation of a project on which $1.5 billion have been expended have their way and constitute environmental nuisance to the project on which government have made much commitment in money, men and resources?
Newdawnngr.com contacted the Corporate Affairs department of NRC both by e-mail,text messages since January 2020 and recently paid visits to the NRC headquarters in Ebutte Metta but nobody in the Corporate affairs department was ready to entertain question. As we write, they are even yet to respond to our e mails, written letters etc.
We hope those who are in authority would not kill a project on which billion dollars loans have been procured before the project itself took off!
