Tension on Abuja/Keffi Road, toddler loses life

Travellers from the Central and Eastern parts of Nigeria using the ever busy Keffi-Abuja road were held up at the University town of Auta via Keffi for hours on Saturday over communal protests in the area.

A commercial vehicle was said to have knocked down a young boy at the area very close to Bingham University on Friday night but the indigenes went protesting over the reckless driving of commercial Drivers on the road when the boy gave up the ghost Saturday morning.
The vexed youths of the community whose king is a third class king in Nasarawa State blocked the road holding commuters to protracted traffic jam. Some military convoy on the way to Abuja pleaded with the youths to no avail.
The Area Commander of the New Yanya Police Area Command, P. O. Atta who spoke to me from the Estu of Auta Kodate Palace said they have just resolved the matter with the community leaders and in a matter of minutes the traffic on the major road will flow freely again.
Mr. Atta said measures will be put in place to check the reckless driving of the commuters who are connecting the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja through the central and Eastern parts of the nation.
Some traders were seen busy making brisk business selling water and take away food to stranded travellers.
The Abuja-Keffi is notorious for traffic hold ups in certain communities notably Mararaba, Yanya and Karu.
