The Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi,has enjoined parents in Ekiti to ensure that all school- age children register for the forthcoming 2019/2020 academic session.
Fayemi who stated this during an enrolment sensitization campaign in Ekiti,said that parents who keep their school – age children out of school run the risk of being prosecuted adding that parents and guardian should key into his administration’s free education programme.
This provision,it will be recalled was contained in the State’s Child Right Law adding that any parent or guardian acting contrary to this would be acting against the law.
The state government had last week started the school enrollment campaign so as to ensure that all school- age children register for the forthcoming session.
Speaking Governor Fayemi said,” we have a Child Right Act in Ekiti which prohibits parents from disallowing children of school- age to be out of school during school session”
He threatened further,” if your child is not in school when the school is in session, you have a lot to explain because we will apprehend the child whether he is found hawking on the street or engaging in any illicit activities which prevent him or her from being on school.”
Towards implementing the law, he said a family court saddled with the responsibility for children that are not in school and parents who fail in their responsibility, have been set up ”
He said government currently is providing free and quality education in order to ensure that children must have solid foundation built by the both the state, parent or guardian.
