Hundreds of North West Youths on Thursday stormed the entrance of National Assembly drumming support for Senator Kabiru Gaya’s ambition as the next Deputy Senate President.
The Youths who occupied the entrance of National Assembly as early as 10am chanting solidarity songs asking Senators-elect to vote for their candidate.
The youths carried placard with an Inscription of “North West Youths Support Gaya for DSP”.
The group appealed to leadership of All Progressive Congress (APC) to zone the position of Deputy Senate President to North West because of contributions of the region to rejection of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Speaking with newsmen, one of the leaders of the group, Mujaheed Zaitawa said the Gaya deserved to be Deputy Senate President because of his contributions in the Senate Chamber.
He recalled how Senator Gaya sponsored a bill that facilitated creation of North East Development Commission (NEDC) which Mr. President signed into law and also sponsored a motion detention of Zainab Aliyu by Saudi Authorities and was released same day after the motion.
He said the ‘North West Youths’ believes that they have a good representatives of Hausa/Fulani who can protect the interest of the region in the Senate adding that the region gave the Buhari six million votes in the 2019 Presidential Election.
He said,” We are calling the attention of the APC leaders to Zone the position of DSP to North West because the position of Senate President has been zoned to North East ,, and that of Deputy Speaker is also Zone to North Central and Secretary to the Government of Federation to North East, so the North West deserves the Deputy Senate President slot for the sake of equity .”
He added that North West deserved to have Deputy Senate Presidency in order to protect their interest in the Senate.
He lamented that only 6 percent of 2019 budget was given to North West while South West gets 38 percent.
Also speaking, Mustapha Gaya said that the reason for the agitation is because Gaya is the longest serving Senator in the North West and also has the highest number of local governments in the Senate.
He added that Gaya’s projects spread across sixteen local governments in the Kano which revealed his impact in the Senatorial district .
