The latest news in town, concerning Charly Boy, is that of his relocation to Imo State.
This is coming weeks after he confessed to collecting millions of naira running into nine digits from his friend, way back in the days National Drug Law Enforcement Agent (NDLEA), Mr. Festus Keyamo, the spokesman of Muhammadu Buhari’s Campaign Organisation.
While that over flogged issue is not the crux of this piece, we are only concerned about the implications of his return to his roots where his queer behaviour all started back in the late 1980s.
First we will start with his journey from Owerri to Lagos after his return from America where he had gone to acquire more education.
In the late 1980s, he left Owerri to Lagos where his late father, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, was then as a Supreme Court judge.
Owerri was also where his odyssey into the world of music or showmanship took root; it was in that city that he released two of his most popular songs, ‘Nwata Miss and 1990.’
In Lagos, he lived in a house rented by his father, in preparation for his retirement, in Gbagada area of the State. Today, the place is known as Charly Bus Stop. It was in Lagos that he became a full blown ‘rude boy’ like the Rastas will say with the help of the likes of Chief Tony Okoroji. He became a newsmaker for all the bad reasons just as he did some incredible television and musical video productions. He produced musical video for King Sunny Ade (KSA), produced the then Okoroji led performing Musicians Employers’ Association of Nigeria (PMAN), musical award video held in Lagos and Abuja. Had a regular TV show on Nigerian Television (NTA) with his partner Tunde Obe; a programme that politicians fell over themselves to appear in and do the usual ‘zum, zum.’

He was also reputed to have taken a fight to the now defunct Prime People over a story written about him by Dr. Ricky Ahize, now a lecture. Charly Boy and his entourage made of on Glory Anozie, met their match in the hands of Prime People’s staff and ended up spending the night at a police station.
Many feared him until his demystification started; his Gbgada landlord threw him out of her house over unpaid rent. He relocated to Abuja and continued his runs.
On the final burial day of his father, Charly Boy’s misunderstanding with Rochas Okorocha came to the fore for all to see. He publicly accused the incumbent Governor of Imo State, Okorocha, of turning his father’s burial into a political platform and wasted no time in snatching the microphone from him to stop him from making further political speech.
Such has been Charly Boy’s relationship with the powers that be in Imo State that it was with mixed feeling that we received the news that he has decided to return to ‘ala’ Owerri and that he is been considered for an appointment by the new governor.
While we are not against the rumour that he might make Ihedioha’s cabinet, after all he is a Nigerian whose place of birth is not a subject of dispute like that of some people, we pray and hope he makes the cabinet so that he can do what he preaches with his ‘ourmumudondo’ group.
Though, in a reaction to the appointment rumour, Charly Boy said, “”Kai una Mumu Na factory fitted. God for bid. Me in a governor’s cabinet? Una no well I swear.“
