Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senators -elect on Sunday rejected the candidacy of Senator Ahmad Lawan for the Senate President seat.
The rejection of the Senators-elect came after the ruling party said their aspirants for the Senate President seat are free to negotiate with PDP Senators-elect.
The position of the Senators-elect came after Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe and Senator-elect Gabriel Susuwan openly rejected imposition of Senator Ahmad Lawan by the ruling party.
However, some PDP Senators who spoke uncondition of anonymity vowed to give block votes to any candidate that will ensure independent of legislative arms of government.
One of the Senator from South- South said,” we will give block votes for any APC candidate who will not been as a ‘rubber stamp’ of the Executive.
Another PDP Senator-elect said ,” the endorsement of Lawan by the National Chairman of All Progressive Congress (APC) will easily compromise the Independence of Legislature.”
some of Senators-elect are more comfortable with candidacy of either Senator Danjuma Goje or former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume.
According to one of the Senators-elect , we are more comfortable with either Senator Goje or Ndume than Lawan who perceived as Executive puppet.
PDP Senator-elect said, “they are not unaware that Ndume is a die hard BUHARI LOYALIST but believes he is a lot more flexible and sincere to work with and will not mind staking their votes on him against Lawan whom is perceived as a stooge in the hands of a certain faction within the executive.”
On voting pattern to be adopted, Senators-elect vowed to resist any attempt to change go back to “open ballot” voting
It could be recalled that Senate Rule Book 2015 (as amended), otherwise known as the Senate Standing Orders 2015 (as amended) recognised secret ballot system for the election of Senate President and the Deputy Senate President.
