A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chieftain, Mr Emmanuel Ogidi, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to correct the identified lapses in the Feb. 23 polls ahead of the March 9 election.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja that this would improve INEC’s standing in Nigerians that were not satisfied with the Feb. 23 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

Ogidi, who is the National Vice Chairman, South-South, PDP, said that INEC needed to restore the faith of Nigerians in its operations and capability.

He pointed out that the postponement of the just-concluded polls from Feb. 16, led to apathy among the electorate, adding that the elections were still characterised by late arrival of INEC officials and materials.

Ogidi, however, urged the electorate to come out en masse to vote on Saturday in the governorship and House of Assembly elections.

He advised INEC to rise up to its responsibility of conducting the elections and making the votes of the people count.

He also urged the military to stay away from the polls, saying that the Police were capable of dealing with security issues in elections, especially as constitutionally provided.

The party stalwart commended Nigerians for coming out during the last elections in spite of the threats to life, saying that the people did well, with some citizens putting their lives on the line.

Ogidi announced that he would retire from active politics after Saturday’s elections “on age grounds’’, and advised the youth to make role models of good leaders and shun the bad ones. (NAN)
