I received with sadness the news about the sudden transition at 79 of Reverend (Mrs) Tola Oyediran, our beloved compatriot and the daughter of our eternal leader, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

We join her family and the entire Awolowo dynasty in taking solace in the fact that Mrs Oyediran lived a fulfilled life. For more than 50 years, God has helped Mrs Oyediran together with her husband, Prof. Oyediran, to contribute immensely to the development of our great country, to serve humanity and to raise godly children. As a child who grew up during the time of political turmoil of the old Western Region of the 1960s, God has used her to uphold the legacies of our leader, Chief Awolowo. She carried herself with serenity and queenly dignity as a lady of great purpose.

On behalf of myself and my family, I commiserate with Prof. Oyediran and their children, and grandchildren together with the rest of Awolowo biological and political family at this trying period. May God grant all of us and Nigeria the courage to face the future in greater glory.

Please accept my deepest condolences,

Chief Bisi Akande
