Residents of Ijeododo town, a growing community in Iba Local Council Development Area (LCDA), of Lagos State are lamenting over power outage in the area.

The town has been thrown  into blackout for about two months due to  pipeline fires, which have occurred on several occasions.

According to a resident who resides in the town and who craved anonymity who gave account of how the blackout has affected his business

“On March 15, 2020, the community was thrown into darkness because of a pipeline blast that occurred on a Sunday morning at Abule Ado area of Lagos.

“Ever since, we haven’t heard anything about electricity. I have a shop where I sell frozen foods, due to the blackout, I have no choice than to burn fuel daily and it is affecting the profit of my business,” he said.

The blackout has crippled economic activities in the community where many artisans and petty traders depend on electricity for operations.

A fashion designer, Mrs. Timilehin Abosede, also explaned how the blackout has been affecting her vocation.

“There is no light, we cannot use our weaving machines and we can’t iron our customer’s clothes, government should please find solution to our light,” she said.

A hair dresser, who identified herself as Iya Christana said she uses her power generator, which meant additional cost.

It was learnt that some of the residents cannot freeze their foods anymore except those who can afford to buy fuel for generators.

However, many people cannot afford power generators anymore because of the daily burning of fuels.

A welder who craves anonymity said he has lost some patronage due to the blackout because custoumers could not pay for using power generator for their services

“The cost of welding has gone high because of the use of generator instead of electricity,” he said.

According to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the power outage has resulted in queues in petrol station in the area as more residents use power generators to run their homes and businesses to survive.

The residents of Ijeododo town urge the government to find lasting solution to the blackout in the community.
