Highlife legend, Victor Olaiya, dies at 89

Nigerian highlife music legend and trumpeter, Victor Olaiya has died.

Olaiya, 89 was born 31st December 1930. He died after a brief illness.

The legend passed on at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) on Wednesday as confirmed by the Managing Director of Evergreen Music Company Ltd, Bimbo Esho.

Victor Abimbola Olaiya also known as Dr. Victor Olaiya played highlife music which was extremely famous in Nigeria and Ghana during the 1950s and early 1960s.

He also received recognition outside Nigeria and Alhaji Alade Odunewu of the then Daily Times described Olaiya as “The Evil Genius of Highlife.”

He will be greatly missed by the entertainment industry in Nigeria.
